![]() otoh, a black glass tungsol gave a romantic tone at the expense of some detaile.Īs hansen pointed out, there are other factors, not just the tube, that affect a preamp's character - circuit, caps used. looks like the stock tubes brought out the best from the preamp insofar as liveliness and clarity is concerned. on the dH, i tried tube rolling with 5-6 types of 6sn7 tubes in my stash. the 6sn7 preamps are very responsive to type of tubes can sound thin and anemic with some octal types and as lush as a tube can be. The analog-like presentation on deHavilland seems consistent with what we heard with the prototype 6sn7 and another reference 6sn7 we used. OF, am sending you a PM on some of the preamps we used to compare. Just recently in a very brief A/B/A with the BAT VK3ix at AA, it was easily evident that the 6922 based BAT preamp had a clearer, more detailed, more focused, airier, silkier sound (must be the paper in oil caps hehe) with deeper and more powerful bass while driving its natural partner BAT VK55 (but note, the amp has XLR only inputs which necessitated the use of XLR adaptors for the Ultraverve so medyo unfair ang laban), BUT I can't help but note the more analog, warmer, meatier and livelier (if less audiophile) sound of the Ultraverve. It has that relaxed dynamism that makes music sound easy to listen to and yet powerful and expressive at the same time while having proper pitch and timbre. That preamp has a certain rightness to its sound and I think I know exactly what it is: it has a more analog-like sound (even with digital sources hehe) in terms of tonal balance and dynamics compared to other preamps. I agree with ya with respect to the Ultraverve. (of course you will also understand, the guys are biased.hehehe) the 6sn7 Tono preamp is not a Foreplay clone nor a VTV clone, it is something we believe will be better. as expected from any Tono product, it is NOT a clone of any other product out there. bragging aside, it beat* the other and all other preamps we had (commercial and DIY), we are going to call it Tono supreme it will have Goldpoint or DACT attenuators as options for those who must have them and a concoction of other premium goodies. runner-up is a 6sn7 preamp (that will soon replace the Tono 12au7 preamp!), and top slot goes to another prototype that will soon debut at the Audio Fair. 5 DIYhard guys got together very recently for a marathon 8 hour stress testing/listening session on various preamp prototypes.
